What do I bring on my fishing trip?

GEAR

  • Polarized glasses (Brown, copper and amber lenses work best on the Molokai flats)

  • Sunscreen (Days are long and shade is limited)

  • Water shoes

TACKLE

  • Josiah can provide you with high-quality fly fishing gear, but you're welcome to bring your own 7-9 weight fly rods or other light tackle.

  • Flies will be provided, but also feel free to bring your own selection.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

  • Be prepared for wind! Practice that double haul cast to give yourself the maximum opportunity for success when shots at fish present themselves. Being comfortable casting accurately from at least 20’-60’ is preferable.

What kind of fish can I catch?

Molokai hosts a diverse range of reef fish, including highly sought-after species like Giant Trevally, Bonefish (O’io), and others, depending on the location and time of year.

When is the best time to hunt?

Bucks & Bones offers year-round hunting opportunities, with the peak rutting season for deer occurring between June and July. Bird season in Hawai‘i runs from November to January.

There are various factors and conditions that determine the best time to fish on the flats. Depending on the season and time of year, Josiah can help you plan your trip for the most optimal experience.

What is Pu’u O Hoku Ranch?

Pu‘u O Hoku Ranch is a family-owned BIODYNAMIC® and organic ranch, farm, and rustic retreat center on the remote east end of Moloka‘i, Hawai'i. “Pu‘u O Hoku” is true to its Hawaiian name — which means “Hill of Stars” — surrounded by more than 14,000 acres of protected land, immersed in the transcendent beauty of forest, sky and ocean.

Bucks & Bones has an exclusive opportunity to hunt on this private ranch to help limit the invasive axis deer population. The axis deer here are regarded as some of the largest trophy bucks in Hawaii.

Where do I stay?

Molokai offers several accommodation options for your stay, including Molokai Shores, Airbnb rentals, Dunbar Cottages, and more. We recommend booking these locations in advance, as availability is limited.

Through Bucks & Bones' partnership with Pu'u O Hoku Ranch, clients can enjoy discounted lodging. Guests can choose between private cottages, accommodating 3-4 people, or exclusive access to the lodge, which offers 12 bedrooms.

What can I do with the meat?

Bucks & Bones provides processing and packaging services for an additional fee. To ensure a smooth return home, all meat can be frozen for easy transport.

Is there a taxidermy service?

Bucks & Bones is connected with other businesses on island including Molokai Taxidermy. Molokai Taxidermy can provide all services needed to preserve and display your animals. Pricing can be provided upon request.

Any travel recommendations?

When traveling to Molokai, Mokulele Airlines is currently the only available public transportation option. For guests staying at Pu‘u O Hoku Ranch, helicopter transportation can be arranged for an additional cost.
